![]() ![]() Now that its on sale, Spotifys real road test must prove Car Things. That’s before considering the company’s metaverse investment, buying an entire virtual island in Roblox’s digital world. Spotifys Car Thing Is About to Face the Music Two million raced onto a waitlist for Spotifys first hardware. ![]() The continued voice AI investment is also evident in Spotify’s purchase of synthetic voice startup Sonantic last month, a $92.5 million acquisition according to newly updated SEC filings. The new Car Mode emphasizes using Spotify’s voice assistant, with voice search replacing the option to type out a request on the app when driving. For instance, Spotify began testing a new Car Mode for its mobile app to replace the “Car View” option that Spotify shut down right around the release of the Car Thing. The end of the Car Thing may mean Spotify is no longer interested in creating its own hardware, but the software capabilities of the Car Thing have a solid place in the company’s plans otherwise. “Second, rising inflation and components costs, coupled with the expanded lead time needed to order parts has significantly altered the risk/reward of continuing to lean into further product development.” Spotify Software First, we tested a number of price points and we frankly haven’t seen the volume at the higher prices that would make the current product financially viable,” Spotify CFO Paul Vogel said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call. “Looking specifically at Car Thing, our decision to stop manufacturing the device was made based on a few factors. ![]() Despite that apparent optimism, Spotify decided that there wasn’t enough demand for the Car Thing to match the cost of manufacturing them, especially with the current global supply chain issues and inflation. Spotify was very bullish about the Car Thing, even pushing software upgrades to allow drivers to make calls and play content from third-party streaming services. ReadSpeaker’s VoiceLab tech provides the voice users hear when they say “Hey Spotify” or ask the AI to read any text on the screen. Spotify’s voice assistant relays requests from drivers, aided by a touchpad and joystick. Spotify’s in-car entertainment system known as just Car Thing, launched this spring on an invite-only basis, is now becoming more broadly available. Spotify debuted the Car Thing in a three-month limited release Spotify designed the Car Thing as a way to encourage and streamline access to its services. Existing Car Things will still work and the remaining stock is on sale for half the original $80 price, though shutting down production cost Spotify $31.4 million and hurt its margins in its latest quarterly earnings. If this were a solution to that that didn’t cost as much as, say, Porsche’s faux-classic infotainment system (albeit without phone features), that could be a useful product.Spotify has stopped making the Car Thing media player just nine months after launching the voice-enabled audio player. Classic cars with modern head units are a real pet peeve of mine, but I understand the impulse. One of the promotional pictures shows a cable running down from the device, though, suggesting that it could require an aux cable, which could limit the number of vehicles it works with. The product looks pretty easy to use, allowing you to either use the dial, physical buttons on top, voice controls, or the touch screen to scroll through Spotify’s library of music and podcasts.Īlthough the way the user interacts with it is clear, how it interacts with the car is a little less clear. Plus, colors look muted and lack brilliance.Īudio quality isn’t exactly tuned for rocking out, but you’ll do fine with presentations and Web conferences thanks to plenty of volume from the speakers. At the highest brightness the Folio does all right on an overcast day, just not on a sunny one. You don’t have to lean the screen back very far or get too much off center before distortion kicks in. A matte screen usually indicates wide viewing angles and good sunlight readability, but here it means neither. On top of that, the display isn’t a very good one. The ThinkPad Carbon X1 manages 1600 x 900 pixels in the same size display and starts at $100 less. Even for a business notebook, this is unacceptable. We can forgive not having touch, but we cannot forgive a 1366 x 768 resolution on a 14-inch display, especially at this price. Not including it keeps the cost and the weight down, the latter being the most important for an Ultrabook at this size. The lack of touchscreen on the Folio 9470m is only a drawback if you’re dedicated to using Metro-style apps. If you prefer the Pointstick for navigation, you’ll find it precise and easy to use. The buttons don’t click down in a very satisfying way, but they never gave us problems. We pulled off these gestures plus basic things like pinch-to-zoom with no issues. There’s no touchscreen here, so you have to rely on the touchpad to bring up Windows 8 charms. This prevents issues with finger misplacement and accidental multitouch gesture activation. Though this is an Ultrabook, there’s no “clickpad” nonsense: You get distinct left and right mouse buttons. The top pair of buttons work with the Pointstick sitting between the G, H and B keys. The space below the keyboard is large enough for a generous touchpad and two sets of mouse buttons. As it is, we had to download a keymapper to keep us from accidentally hitting Home when we reached for Backspace. Since there’s plenty of room on either side, HP could have found a way to make Backspace and Enter full-sized. Unfortunately, some keys on the right edge are smaller than they need to be in order to make room for the Home, Page Down/Up, and End keys. ![]() The backlight is sufficient to keep keys visible in low light, but weaker than we’d like. The matte coating on its Chiclet keys improves accuracy by keeping fingers from slipping, there’s plenty of space between them, and travel is decent (though not as good as you would find on a ThinkPad). The spill-resistant keyboard is the same as you’ll find on most EliteBooks, meaning it share the same flaws and triumphs. While we wish there was at least one more USB port, this is more than you get with most Ultrabooks. This is HP’s first docking Ultrabook, so users can expand the ports when sitting in the office. It has an SD card slot, three USB 3.0 ports, VGA, DisplayPort, Ethernet, SmartCard reader, and combo headphone/mic. The Folio’s 0.75-inch thickness accommodates several full-sized ports no dongles needed. There’s a small amount of flex in the lid if you purposefully apply pressure, but not enough to cause a problem when just opening or closing. Though we like the feel of metal under our fingers, the soft-touch coating on the lid and the bottom makes carrying more comfortable, and lessens the chance of it slipping out of your hands. You still get a very solid-feeling machine thanks to the magnesium and aluminum case. Not razor thin or feather light, just very portable for a notebook with a 14-inch display. However, unlike most EliteBooks, the Folio is Ultrabook slim. It shares the same silver-on-black color scheme as the rest of the line, and the streamlined, no-bling deck we expect. The Folio 9470m isn’t an EliteBook in name only. Is it as good in real life as it is on paper? Good blend of business and Ultrabook That makes it a compelling choice for both enterprise and mainstream users. Unlike many consumer Ultrabooks, you don’t have to sacrifice port selection or the ability to swap out the battery yourself. The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m shares some design language with older EliteBooks, but without the bulk and weight. ![]() The Folio was an experiment at the time, but it must have done well for the company, since HP is now willing to brand an Ultrabook with the EliteBook moniker. ![]() That changed last year with the HP Folio 13 Ultrabook, which balanced power and portability with attractive design. This is why many of HP’s business laptops look like they came from a time capsule buried in the sands about five years ago. That often means design that’s less about sleek lines and more about packing in the ports and battery life. HP’s EliteBook line is all about business. Shame unto a man with long hair!Īssociations between race and hairstyle are somewhat familiar to us today. “The very way in which the hair flows is strongly indicative of the ruling passions and inclinations, and perhaps a clever person could give a shrewd guess at the manner of a man’s or woman’s disposition by only seeing the backs of their heads.”īut more than 100 years before accounts connecting hair with personality traits became commonplace, white Americans had already been using hair as a shorthand for classifying and interpreting race. This taxonomy ended with a provocative suggestion that highlighted the deference people gave to hair: “Harsh, upright hair,” for example, signaled “a stubborn and harsh character.” Flat hair indicated “a melancholy but extremely constant character,” while auburn-haired people had “the highest capacity for enjoyment or suffering.” Those with coarse black hair had a “tendency to sensuality.” In the 1870s, multiple newspapers reprinted a lengthy taxonomy of the many temperaments hair could communicate. Meanwhile, a Kansas City medical journal argued, in 1899, that “in criminals, as a rule, the beard is scanty.” In 1863, for example, the literary magazine The Knickerbocker dedicated 13 pages to defending men who parted their hair in the middle – a style thought to indicate weakness. We also got a call from saying we could not use the word “organic” because that’s a federally controlled word and federally illegal cannabis cannot use it. So, we went from essentially what could be considered organic farming to be being forced to not do that. The Department of Agriculture in Colorado started to enforce the pesticide rules and came up with what’s now called the “approved list.” None of those OMRI-certified products made it onto the approved list. And, of course, it doesn’t list cannabis as one of the uses.
